Designers bring splashes of sunshine to the
runway for spring 2010. Vibrant brights add a
sense of excitement to the color palette, while
practical neutrals provide a safety net for
cautious consumers.
“Now more than ever, women are vigilant when
it comes to spending,” said Leatrice Eiseman,
executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®.
“Instead of reinventing their wardrobe at the
start of each season, consumers want pieces to
complement what they already own. Pairing a
bold color with a basic piece or freshening up
their look with bright accents addresses the
need for practicality, as well as fun.”
Spring and summer naturally evoke feelings of
calm ocean waters and tranquil beach vacations
in cool, vibrant, tropical Turquoise. This soothing
hue from the blue-green family conjures feelings
of escape, especially when paired with Amparo
Blue. With more warmth than the typical spring
navy, this particular shade of blue is extremely
appealing because of its brighter, more energetic
attitude. Like the scent of a blossoming flower,
Violet lends a romantic air to the warm-weather
palette. This intriguing purplish hue is a distinctive
addition to any wardrobe.
Yellow has made its mark on fashion and spring
will further this trend with gleaming Aurora.
Reminiscent of the first glimpse of yellow as the
sun begins to rise over the horizon, this shimmering,
slightly greenish yellow adds a bold infusion.
Energy continues to surge throughout the warmer
hues of spring, leading to provocative Fusion
Coral. This inviting orange connects directly to
tangy Tomato Purée, this season’s classic red.
Pair it with Turquoise for a retro look.
Thoughtful, cautious neutrals provide a dependable
backbone to the brights of spring. Kick back and
enjoy the bubbly luxury of Pink Champagne. This
delicate, wispy tint is the season’s newest neutral.
The melding of Pink Champagne, Tomato Purée
and Amparo Blue is a refreshing take on the classic
springtime combination of red, white and blue.
Three additional neutrals round out the palette.
Tuscany, a warm beige hue, provides the perfect
backdrop and works well as a solid base color with
dynamic accents like Fusion Coral or Violet. Dried
Herb is the ultimate green neutral, pairing well with
all other colors. Ideal for bigger ticket items, cool
Eucalyptus is the eternal, practical gray. Choose
this nuanced neutral and add brightly colored
exclamation points in shoes, jewelry and handbags.

Spring traditionally evokes a sense of freshness and new
beginnings, with sprouting shoots and blossoming flowers
that inspire designers to breakout of the winter doldrums.
Bright colors return to the top 10 list for spring ’09, as
designers incorporate vibrant pops into their collections, yet
temper the vibrancy with deeper, translucent or neutral tones.
“New York’s fashion designers encourage hopeful attitudes
with lively colors, while sophisticated, grounded hues
address the need for stability in times of economic
uncertainty,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director
of the Pantone Color Institute®.
Fall ’08 saw blue and purple rise to the forefront of fashion.
As is often true, colors evolve from season to season, and
spring ’09 is no exception. Palace Blue, a favorite among
designers this season, takes a steadfast, classic, spring
navy-like tone and makes it sparkle. Paired with just about
any color in the report, it offers many intriguing spring
combinations. Taking purple in a lighter direction, Lavender
presents a softer, more summery hue, extending the mystical
aspects of purple available last fall.
As yellow continues to make its mark on the world of fashion,
tangy Super Lemon brings a fun, optimistic outlook to the
palette. Its luminosity is determined to evoke a smile and
attract the roving consumer’s eyes. Taking a cue from its
lemony neighbor, friendly and approachable Salmon Rose
also conveys an optimistic outlook. The subtlest of oranges,
Salmon Rose is flattering to most complexions and is
beautiful with a summer glow. Think sensual and seductive
Fuchsia Red for clothing, as well as lipstick and nail polish
selections, this spring. With its blue undertones, this cool red is
a real show-stopper, adding a sense of elegance to the palette.
Stabilizing neutrals provide practicality in a changing
economic landscape. Not your average beige, Rose Dust
breaks away from the typical neutrals associated with spring
by adding dimension with subtle rose undertones. And with
its bluish-green undertones, cool Slate Gray is a nuanced
neutral that can be paired with any of the other nine colors
in the report.
Three greens, each with their own distinct personality, round
out the color palette for spring ‘09, perpetuating the idea of
freshness and renewal. Vibrant Green, the quintessential
spring hue, brings a true verdancy to the palette in a time
of revitalization. Dark Citron, a citrus-inspired green, is
calmer and more serious than most, offering an element of
sophistication to the mix. Reflective Lucite Green, a clean,
clear subtle hue, adds a slight shimmer.

Refreshing splashes of invigorating brights punctuate
classic, versatile neutrals as designers offer a playful
spring palette for endless exploration and creative
combinations. Variations on popular colors such as
energizing red, cool, waterborne blue and eco-friendly
greens also play a key role this season.
“The spring ‘08 color palette perfectly reflects the

“Stabilizing neutrals combined with pops of brighter
colors to create unique, distinctive looks are the basis
for a great spring and summer wardrobe.”
Vibrant Snorkel Blue, a favorite this season among
designers, is your dependable navy but with more
animation and sophistication. Look for this cobalt-like
shade in many patterns and prints for spring. Warm,
cheerful Freesia, like an uplifting ray of sunshine, is a
friendly, inviting color to which people are instinctively
drawn. It is also a color that allows for diverse
accessorizing opportunities in jewelry and shoes.
Brighter reds are consistent favorites in spring, and
provocative Rococco Red does not disappoint as
an exciting, attention-getting classic. The deep pink
undertones of flowery Spring Crocus make this
among the prettiest, most wearable purples.
Revitalizing Daiquiri Green, a bright and cheerful
version of the popular earth-tone yellow-greens
naturally associated with eco-awareness, is a
refreshing complement to the coolness of Pink Mist.
This delicate, subtle pink with blue undertones pairs
perfectly with any other color in the palette for a very
feminine look. Against neutrals, luscious Cantaloupe
is warm, nurturing and sweetly appealing – a great
addition to any wardrobe, especially when paired with
chocolate browns. Glitzy Silver Gray has a sheen
reminiscent of the popular metallics that will continue
to add a touch of excitement to any outfit. With
beautiful undertones, warm, enticing Croissant is
a delicious base for spring’s more exciting accents.
Opt for trans-seasonal Golden Olive as another
distinctive staple and tasteful accompaniment to
2008’s newest shades.
